Burleigh County
Burleigh County was created by the Dakota Territory legislature in January 1873, with governmental organization beginning that July. Its boundaries changed several times during the following decade. The county’s name honors territorial political figure Walter A. Burleigh. Bismarck serves as both county seat and North Dakota’s capital, giving the city two civic roles. The Missouri River and surrounding agricultural terrain place that administrative center within a landscape extending far beyond the urban core.
Bismarck is the county’s largest community, but Lincoln, Wing, and Regan add other local reference points. The Missouri River follows part of the western boundary, while rolling ground and agricultural areas extend farther east. A county visit can therefore take in the capital city without overlooking its rural surroundings. Community names and river geography provide a clearer local map than the metropolitan label alone, especially for places beyond Bismarck’s streets.
